The Challenge of Hybrid Flexible Learning: A Matrix Video Communications Corp. and Legrand AV Case Study

An overview of an upgraded hybrid learning classroom at Vancouver Island University.

For the 2021/2022 academic year, Vancouver Island University made the decision to transition all classes to a new HyFlex model. HyFlex, a combination of "hybrid" and "flexible", allows students to participate either face-to-face in the classroom, via live video conference, or by watching recorded lectures asynchronously. This new approach aimed to create a more accessible learning environment.

However, the university's existing classroom technology was not equipped to facilitate HyFlex requirements. Classrooms had basic equipment like projectors, screens, and instructor PCs, but limited microphones. AV technicians Jeff Egan and Sabin Ignat received complaints that audio quality for remote participants was poor.

SEEKING A FLEXIBLE, COST-EFFECTIVE SOLUTION

Egan and Ignat began searching for an affordable yet flexible solution to upgrade VIU's classrooms for HyFlex. "The thing I was looking for was ease of setup," said Egan. After consulting with integrator Greg Johnston- Watson at Matrix Video Communications, they chose Vaddio's EasyIP product line for its flexibility and cost-effectiveness compared to other options.

A STREAMLINED INSTALLATION PROCESS

Within just two weeks and with a single installer's help, Egan and Ignat deployed Vaddio systems in 25 classrooms. A typical setup included an EasyIP 10 PTZ camera, two EasyIP CeilingMIC D microphones, and an EasyIP Mixer. Vaddio's integrated mounting hardware and cabling made ordering and installation easier. For larger lecture halls, they added extra cameras and microphones. "All we had to do was add a couple more cables and buy a couple more mics - don't have to do anything else," noted Egan.

SIMPLE INTEGRATION AND OPERATION

A key benefit was Vaddio's ability to integrate with VIU's existing Extron control systems. Egan found programming camera controls and presets "super intuitive." The touch-free ceiling microphones were also a plus, avoiding degradation issues of past systems. Because instructors didn't need to learn new systems, adoption was smooth. "If we're not getting any complaints about it, then that's good news," said Egan.

INCREASED ENGAGEMENT AND FLEXIBILITY

The HyFlex implementation was a success, with more students taking advantage of distance options. Ignat highlighted "another major advantage is that they can have exchanges of lectures, inviting teachers from other universities and also even inviting other students or potential future students. "With a cost-effective, flexible solution in place, Vancouver Island University could provide a cutting-edge hybrid learning experience to meet modern student needs.

Hybrid flexible learning, as shown in the case study, combines different methods to meet students’ needs. Just like writing a law research paper, it requires planning and adaptability to ensure success. Balancing flexibility with structure is key in both.
